Cat Doesn’t Want to Eat and is Losing Weight

By taking care of our pet, we primarily try to ensure that they are fed as well as possible. We all know how important the right choice of food is for cats. This way, cats remain healthy, maintain proper weight, and keep the right condition of their entire body. However, there are situations when our pet stops eating. This is a very concerning signal. If this condition persists, you can be sure something is wrong and appropriate steps should be taken.

The situations in which a cat refuses to eat can vary widely. When your pet doesn’t want to eat for a day or two, it may not necessarily be a sign of illness. Cats can be quite picky, and sometimes for that reason, they may skip a meal. Additionally, a dirty bowl can also deter our furry friends, causing them to avoid it. It is also common for cats, just like humans, simply to not feel hungry. There are also times when cats refuse meals due to high stress. As we know, they are very prone to stress. If a cat is without its owner, for example, if the owner has had to leave for a few days, the cat may also refuse to eat. A common case also arises when small kittens, just weaned from their mother, do not want to eat. Lack of appetite is also common in older cats, for natural reasons.

However, when you notice that the above condition persists and at the same time you observe changes in your cat’s behavior, then there is a cause for concern. For example, if your cat is vomiting, has diarrhea, or has a fever – do not hesitate, just take it to the vet. Of course, it may turn out that it is nothing serious, but the consequences could be too severe, which is why it’s better to err on the side of caution. There can be many reasons why cats don’t want to eat, in the case of less serious ailments, such as gastrointestinal obstruction or worms. However, it may also happen that these are symptoms of much more serious diseases, such as diabetes or even kidney failure. If it is a serious disease, the response time is very important here.

When our pet doesn’t want to eat, we should do everything to encourage them to do so. You can start by changing their food. If your cat is being picky, this simple action should solve the problem right away. However, if the causes are more serious, it is worth trying to get the cat to consume at least small amounts of food.

In a situation where a cat is not consuming food, it always worries its owner. It’s worth remembering that it doesn’t necessarily mean the worst; it may simply mean that your pet isn’t in the mood for meals at the moment. However, on the other hand, this problem should not be taken lightly. Thus, if you notice that your cat isn’t eating, and its behavior has changed, it is lethargic, or other troubling symptoms appear, you should definitely monitor the cat and take them to the vet if necessary.
