Closed Cat Litter Box – Advantages and Disadvantages
Many people opt for a closed litter box. It can resemble both a carrier and a small house. Thanks to this, the animal’s waste is not visible, and the smell is less noticeable. Many models also have a replaceable carbon filter, which completely eliminates unpleasant odors. Of course, this is not the end of the advantages of this model, as it is easier to maintain cleanliness since the cat cannot throw or spill litter out of it. Therefore, you do not have to worry about having to clean up again. The aesthetics are also quite interesting, and that is indeed worth acknowledging. But to not make it seem too colorful, the closed cat litter box is relatively expensive, especially if you choose a model with a filter. Additionally, it may not be suitable for every animal, particularly if the cat is a senior, as it may have trouble entering it. It also may not work for large animals unless you buy a larger size. Many pets are also hesitant to enter such a facility. The closed litter box can serve another function, although this can be considered more of a disadvantage than an advantage, as the pet may turn it into a base and not necessarily see it as a toilet.
Open Cat Litter Box – Disadvantages and Advantages
Of course, you can also opt for an open litter box, which is very inexpensive. But as you might guess, it has its share of disadvantages. Primarily, because it is open, everything is visible, quite literally, which means you have to clean it often, as the effect of cat waste is indeed unpleasant. It’s worth mentioning that this solution does not work well if you have small children in the house, who may unfortunately reach in and pull out the contents of the litter box. We must also mention the odor, which to put it mildly, is quite noticeable. Another disadvantage is that unfortunately, cats often throw litter or sand out of the box, so you will have quite a bit of cleaning up to do. However, to balance the disadvantages, one of the advantages, besides the price, is the quick litter change, as you do not have to lift the lid, dismantle, and then reassemble it, which is the case with closed litter boxes. This type of litter box also has lower edges, making it easier for the animal to enter, which is particularly important in the case of senior cats. Of course, remember that if your cat has been using an open litter box so far, it may simply not get used to the closed one, in which case you’ll be throwing money down the drain, but if you have a young cat, there should be no problem with acceptance.
