When buying a kitten from a good breeder, the owner usually does not have to worry that the pet will be infested with fleas. The situation is somewhat different in the case of mixed-breed cats. It may also turn out that another animal living in your home „brings” fleas from outside and that is how your little kitten got its first fleas in life. How to deal with it?
Fleas on a little kitten – not such a terrible problem
Many owners are very anxious about the fact that their kitten has fleas. Indeed, it is not pleasant, but at the same time, it is not a very big problem that is hard to handle. Getting rid of the problem can be surprisingly simple and can be dealt with in a short time. A bath will be useful, and it should be done with the appropriate shampoo. Bathing a cat is not pleasant; generally, if the animal has not been bathed at the breeder, it will be a new experience for it and may simply be scared. However, it is better to get the animal accustomed to water, as if the cat is an outdoor one, it may turn out that one day it comes back home not smelling very good, and thanks to familiarization, you can wash it quickly. Therefore, the first method to deal with fleas is, of course, bathing the animal. Here we remind you to choose a shampoo dedicated for kittens. We also have another tip for you, specifically, before the bath, gently dampen the little animal’s face with water; this way, fleas won’t escape to that area. Also, remember to regularly comb the fur.
How about a collar?
According to the principle that it is better to prevent than to cure, it is worth considering putting a flea collar on your pet, which also aims to protect against ticks. Usually, such collars can be used on animals over 3 months old. Remember to replace them regularly every three months. Additionally, pay attention to the composition, which should be as natural as possible; therefore, we recommend choosing collars that contain a mixture of herbal oils.
Are fleas dangerous for a kitten?
Even a single flea bite can be dangerous for the animal, as it may turn out that your cat is allergic. In that case, large red spots appear on the skin, and the kitten begins to scratch intensely. It is worthwhile, and even necessary, to go to a veterinarian in such a situation, who will implement appropriate treatment. Every pet owner must remember that not only the pet can bring fleas into the home. Even unknowingly, you can bring fleas into the house on your pants or shoes, and then it only takes a moment for the animal to get infected. Therefore, prevention is very important, but so is cleanliness. Regular cleaning and vacuuming significantly reduce the risk.
