It might seem that allergies only occur in purebred cats and that the problem does not concern regular mixed breeds. Nothing could be further from the truth, although the inheritance of allergies is a fact. Not only are purebred cats bred within a narrow circle. Stray cats most often occupy a specific area and breed among themselves. Our developing civilization does not make things easier at all. It is actually difficult to determine why this particular individual has a compromised immune system. Air pollution, chemicals; one could deliberate on the causes of the disease state in our pet.
An allergy is a pathological, abnormal reaction of the body to foreign molecules called allergens. It leads to the production of specific immunoglobulin IgE antibodies and the release of substances responsible for eliminating inflammation.
Why are some cats allergic while others are not? It is not entirely known. Most likely, genetics is to blame. The tendency for allergies can indeed be inherited from parents, or even grandparents.
The basis of treatment is the implementation of an appropriate diet. It is worth reaching for special, well-composed hypoallergenic foods containing hydrolyzed proteins that do not cause allergies, as well as ingredients that soothe inflammatory conditions and reduce itching. These foods undergo appropriate technological processing, which reduces the risk of allergies occurring. They are also rich in extremely important omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are responsible for strengthening and nourishing the skin and coat.
There are also veterinary hypoallergenic cat foods designed to support allergy treatment. The term hypoallergenic means – not causing allergies.
Cats most often suffer from food allergies or food intolerances. Although they are not the same, in both cases it is necessary to start feeding a hypoallergenic cat food to alleviate symptoms. These ailments are closely related to genetic predispositions to hypersensitivity to certain foods. Our pets may be allergic to beef, chicken meat, fish, eggs, or milk. The occurrence of allergies may be influenced by the dyes, preservatives, and flavor enhancers contained in ready-made foods.
To avoid complications caused by allergies, we must, above all, observe our pet and catch any disturbing symptoms:
The basic symptoms include:
- intense itching,
- skin changes in the form of redness, dandruff, hives, scabs,
- swelling around the face may occur,
- shaking of the head and frequent scratching, especially around the head and ears,
- intense licking, which may lead to wounds or localized hair loss,
- poor coat condition,
- apathy.
Additionally, a cat suffering from food allergies may have recurrent inflammation of the ears, lips, paw pads and the spaces between the pads, as well as perianal glands. In severe cases, there can also be breathing problems and coughing.
It is impossible to completely cure allergies; they usually last a lifetime, sometimes only the symptoms can subside. In cases of exacerbation of symptoms, pharmacological treatment is introduced, and the affected cat is separated from the allergen.
