Working with Cats – How to Find Interesting Job Offers?

Cat lovers have quite a few opportunities to find work related to caring for their favorite pets. Experience or completion of specialized courses is not always required – sometimes love for furry companions and empathy are enough.

Are you interested in job offers involving animals, particularly cats? Consider what options you have, and then choose effective methods for job searching. Let’s get started!

Jobs Related to Cats:

Veterinarian

The first profession that comes to mind when thinking about working with cats is a veterinarian who specializes in small domestic animals. To take up work in this capacity, it is essential to complete a 5.5-year veterinary program at a veterinary medicine faculty. It’s important to emphasize that being a veterinarian is a medical profession and is subject to legal regulation. During their studies, candidates undergo professional internships, and to practice professionally, they must obtain consent from the National Veterinary Chamber. The studies are general in nature – preparing students to work with various types of animals, not just domestic but also livestock. Specialization can only be pursued after two years of work as a veterinarian – for this purpose, one must enroll in specialized studies organized by the State Veterinary Institute. These studies last 2 years (4 semesters) and include lectures, seminars, and practical classes. Veterinarians have several specializations to choose from – someone interested in caring for domestic pets would select the specialization: Diseases of Dogs and Cats. A companion animal veterinarian can work in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or run their own practice. Typically, this work is done on-site, but in exceptional circumstances, it may be necessary to travel to the pet.

The job is not easy, but it offers a lot of satisfaction. A prerequisite is not only love for animals and empathy but also resilience to stress and the ability to separate personal life from professional duties. The sight of animals in pain can elicit strong emotions, and a veterinarian, as a specialist providing assistance, must be able to stay calm and make sometimes difficult decisions. Well-developed interpersonal skills are also important in this profession, along with the ability to communicate with pet owners – whom veterinarians often instruct on matters such as caring for a sick animal, good care practices, and dietary management.

Breeder of Purebred Cats

Another interesting option is the profession of a breeder. To run a legal cat breeding operation in Poland, one must register with a feline association and meet various housing and sanitary requirements, as well as provide proper veterinary care for the animals. Many feline organizations operate in our country. It is necessary to register with one that is affiliated with one of the international federations, for example: FIFe (Fédération Internationale Féline, represented in Poland by Felis Polonia, the Polish Feline Federation), WCF (World Cat Federation, which includes the Polish Feline Association and the Purebred Cats Association), CFA (The Cat Fanciers’ Association, whose Polish affiliate is the Cat Lovers Association – New Dream Cats’ Club). Membership in a reputable feline organization is essential – without it, a breeder cannot legally sell cats with pedigrees.

One must be prepared for the fact that purchasing cats for breeding is a significant expense; however, the investment can quickly pay off. In our country, popular breeds include British Shorthairs, Siberians, Russians, Ragdolls, Maine Coons, Bengals, Persians, Burmese, Norwegian Forest cats, and Siamese. To run a breeding operation, it is essential to adapt the premises where the animals will be kept. This includes providing beds, scratching posts, bowls, food, litter boxes, litter, cleaning supplies, and securing windows and doors with nets. An important aspect that cannot be overlooked is promoting the business online – a professional website with photos of the cats, regularly updated, is now standard. Importantly – selling cats online is illegal! However, breeding activities can be freely promoted online.

Cat Groomer

The profession of a cat groomer is also becoming increasingly popular in Poland. Some cat breeds require frequent grooming due to their long fur. When tangles appear in the pet’s fur and the owner is unable to handle the matting, a professional equipped with a furminator, comb, brush, and scissors comes to the rescue. A cat groomer can also advise on suitable grooming products. Generally, cats do a great job of maintaining their fur themselves – they remove dirt with their rough tongues. However, there are situations where it is worth helping the pet. A cat groomer will give the animal a bath using products designed for them (remember that shampoos and other human products are unsuitable for cats!). Cat grooming salons also typically offer other grooming services – trimming nails, cleaning ears, and eyes.

Working as a pet groomer can be demanding – a frightened kitten may hiss, scratch, fluff up, or loudly express its displeasure through meowing and whining. It’s understandable – many cats are simply afraid of strangers. A cat groomer must therefore know how to handle animals gently yet firmly, build trust, and display patience. Cat grooming and care salons have the greatest chances of success primarily in large cities. Treatments are usually performed on-site, but offering the option to travel to clients’ homes could be included in the service. This type of work is certainly interesting and can provide a lot of joy.

Cat Sitter

If you are looking for part-time employment, one of the interesting options is the job of a cat sitter. These are individuals who visit cats in their homes when owners, for example, go on vacation. The sitter’s task is to feed the pet, refill the water bowls or fountain, and clean the litter box. Importantly, it’s also about simply playing with the cat, petting, and spending time with them. Cats left alone for too long can feel lonely and sometimes scared, which they may signal through hissing or aggression. A cat sitter must know how to handle a frightened or distressed pet, build trust, and display a great deal of patience. A course in animal behavior can therefore be helpful in this work.

Demand for cat sitters is enormous in the summer months, especially in larger cities. The hourly rate for cat sitting typically ranges from 20 to 50 PLN. It’s also worth noting that sitters are employed in so-called cat hotels, which are places for longer-term animal stays.

Each of the above professions can be performed within the framework of one’s own business. Another option is to seek employment with an already established company in the market. In the latter case, where to look for job proposals?

Working with Cats – Where to Look for Job Announcements?

Searching for work online – with animals, but also in any other field – is best started by registering on a job portal. A good platform for job announcements should be popular (meaning it must have many current advertisements), safe, and free. For example, when searching for job offers as a veterinarian, it is worthwhile to turn to a professional job portal right away. It is also important that the platform we choose is intuitive, easy to navigate, and offers useful tools that facilitate browsing advertisements. For instance, on praca.pl, you only need to type the keyword – e.g., veterinarian – in the upper search bar. You can also set other parameters – place of employment, date of publication of the announcement, etc. After a quick and free registration, praca.pl also allows you to subscribe to a newsletter, set up job alerts, or even create a professional CV from the browser. Searching for job offers through a job advertisement portal is undoubtedly the fastest and easiest way. However, we also have other options.

For example, when it comes to less popular professions – such as cat sitters or cat groomers – a good idea might be to join thematic groups on social networks focusing on cat lovers. It’s also worth considering setting up an account on pet sitter platforms.

When responding to advertisements in places other than dedicated job portals – we should exercise particular caution, not share our personal data without confirming whether we are dealing with a legally operating employer or contractor. Only on professional job portals are offers verified by experts and are fully safe.

The internet is the biggest source of job advertisements, but don’t forget to spread the word among friends and check local bulletin boards. Sometimes someone in our block or on our street is looking for an animal caregiver or behaviorist. We patiently build our network of contacts, reminding about the referral system. Good luck!
